Matt Lawicki, Assistant Coach of the University of Louisville NCAA Division I Women's Lacrosse team, still has to occasionally remind Kentucky natives that Kentucky has a competitive, structured intercollegiate women's lacrosse program.
"Having a D-I program in town has been great. A lot of our players have been fortunate enough to see and be inspired by high-level play," remarks Steve Auden, DuPont Manual's Girls' Lacrosse Varsity Coach. "In many instances [my players] find out they're not as good as they thought they were"--an important taste of realism yet means of escalating play.
The University of Louisville program supports Kentucky girls' lacrosse through a host of camps and clinics at their facilities. Coach Auden remarks the camps are "high-quality", and he recommends that his players participate whenever possible.
This fall U of L has offered three clinics and a 4 v/s 4 tournament with a Winter Camp occurring January 9-11. Each opportunity for skills and team development offered by the university was marked by returning players seeking to refine their skills and new players interested in defining theirs.
Gaining momentum and shaping the fresh future of girls' sports in Kentucky, the Kentucky High School Athletic Association has even begun to sit up and take notice. Each year, the KHSAA surveys of high school athletic directors shows remarkable growth in the girls' sport.
Will it soon be state sanctioned? Both boys and girl representatives sit on the edge of their seats in anticipation of the judgments as new states such as South Carolina bring lacrosse into the high school athletic association fold.
In the meantime, the KLA and established programs such as Kentucky Country Day School, Mercy High School, DuPont Manual High School, and Ballard High School work out and with other coaches and players to foster new programs such as Eastern High School and Christian Academy of Louisville. The teams are quickly transitioning from quirky clubs to well-organized, well-coached programs with tremendous parent support and drive to continue growth.
Fall saw a series of "out-of-season" league games that included Ballard, KCD, Mercy, and Assumption. Ballard appeared to outshine other teams in the league until Kentucky Country Day reminded the coaches, players, and fans why they were the team Ballard battled against in last year's KLA Junior Varsity State Championship Game.
Most images from this page were captured from Fall League play. The girls squeezed every ounce of daylight and often called games on account of "lights." While darkness may force players from the fields, the commonwealth of Kentucky continues to benefit from the bright new light that is girls' and women's lacrosse. It grows in intensity every day, and the Kentucky Lacrosse Association is proud of its participants and strives to support the continued growth of the "fastest sport on two [female] feet" as it makes waves across the bluegrass!
